Garibaldi Provincial Park is a favorite destination of outdoor enthusiasts: it offers a range of hiking opportunities from lush alpine meadows, wildlife viewing opportunities, alpine flowers blooming in lush meadows, and hikes ranging from a few hours to a few days using map and compass. Garibaldi Park has an interesting geological background as it was created by volcanic action which created the formation of many of the park’s peaks; the Black Tusk, Price Mountain, The Table, Mount Garibaldi, the CinderCone and the Glacier Pikes just to name a few. Lava from Clinker Peak is responsible for the creation of The Barrier. Behind this natural dam 300 metre deep Garibaldi Lake was formed.

Best-known for its downhill skiing, snowboarding and winter wonderland activities, Whistler is actually a year-round destination that's perfect for hikers, ramblers and backpackers.

5000 Down - September 10 & 11, 2010

A mass start downhill race that will see 200 men and women starting simultaneously from the peak of Whistler Mountain, proceeding to fly down the mountain past the Roundhouse Lodge, entering at the top of the Garbanzo, riding the Park’s giant slalom course and then crossing the finish line in the Whistler Village.

The Olympics may have come and gone, but with over 11 different ski/ride camps this summer, there's no shortage of Olympic talent on Whistler Blackcomb’s summer glacier.

However, throw in bumper-to-bumper traffic and unexpected delays and the journey can be less than relaxing.

What if you could actually relax and make the travelling portion of the trip a highlight? Well you can. Take the train! The Rocky Mountaineer Whistler Sea to Sky Climb to be exact.

The train starts in North Vancouver, goes through Howe Sound, Squamish, Cheakamus Canyon, and then ends 3 hours later in Whistler. BRITISH COLUMBIA - Who would think of visiting a top-rated ski resort when the slopes were bare?

Turns out so many do at British Columbia’s Whistler-Blackcomb that summer numbers now rival winter ones.

One reason is that turnover is much quicker. The average summer stay is two nights, compared with seven to 10 when the snow flies. Another is the deals on accommodations — standard rooms starting from $99 per night, and luxury ones from $139.

There's always lots to do in the Whistler / Blackcomb / Squamish area in the summertime.

Fire restrictions in place for Whistler

While it hasn't been the warmest spring and summer up to now, it hasn't been the wettest either. As a result the fire danger rating was increased to "High" this week, which means no campfires, brush fires or backyard burns are allowed. Barbecues are still allowed in parks and camping areas, provided they are used and extinguished in a safe manner.

Whistler officially kicked off summer in a fitting way yesterday afternoon, as Momentum Ski Camps hosted their first annual "Splashdown" event on the Blackcomb Base II Water Ramp facilities. The unique event, which not only pits pros and campers against one another, featured awards for different categories such as fun jump, best trick, and the ever-important spin to win.

The event drew some pretty big heavy-hitters including the likes of Colby West, Justin Dorey, Mike Riddle, among others. Noticeably absent from the event was Bobby Brown, who opted to session the Camp of Champions kicker into the sunset.

Summer temperatures are finally forecast to hit B.C. this week, but up at the top of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, the resort is reopening for some out-of-season snowshoeing, skiing, boarding and tubing.

The spring weather on the West Coast has been cool and cloudy this year and the past winter's record snowfall is still hanging on, leaving parts of the alpine as a winter wonderland, according spokeswoman Lauren Everest.
